Seed germination responses to salinity for three rare wetland plants of spring-fed arid systems

چکیده

Spring-fed wetlands within arid systems host unique species of plants, many which are threatened due to the vulnerability these ecosystems. Increased salinity and drier hydrologic regimes anthropogenic activities threaten systems. Furthermore, limited knowledge regarding key life history traits jeopardize restoration management their rare plants. Here, we evaluated aspects seed ecophysiology three plants Southwestern United States: Helianthus paradoxus (Pecos sunflower), Cirsium wrightii (Wright's marsh thistle), Agalinis calycina (Leoncita false-foxglove). We examined dormancy break under controlled conditions effects field-derived gradients on germination. Seeds C. were nondormant at dispersal, germination was high (>70%) all treatments not affected by tested salinities. Germination in H. following cold stratification, but increasing salinities reduced A. seeds required low (<50%) during incubation had greatest negative this species. Our findings contribute wetland spring-fed marshes susceptible groundwater declines human-induced salinization.

Effects of Autumn and Spring Heat Waves on Seed Germination of High Mountain Plants

Alpine plants are considered to be particularly vulnerable to climate change and related extreme episodes, such as heat waves. Despite growing interest in the impact of heat waves on alpine plants, knowledge about their effects on regeneration is still fragmentary. Recruitment from seeds will be crucial for the successful migration and survival of these species and will play a key role in their...

Effect of Germination Regulating Chemicals on Seed Germination of Halogeton Glomeratus for Alleviation of Salinity Stress

Halogeton glomeratus (Bieb.) C.A. Mey (Chenopodiaceae) is an annual forb that is widely distributed in mixed desert shrub, salt desert shrub and pinyon-juniper communities of northern Utah. Halogeton glomeratus seeds gave only 78% germination in distilled water. Fusicoccin (FC) had some effects in partially alleviating innate dormancy while other chemicals had no effect. Seed germination was in...

The Effect of drought and salinity stresses on seed germination of Alyssum hamalocarpum in Iran’s arid lands

The current study aimed to investigate the effect of two abiotic stresses including salinity and drought on seed germination characteristics of Allyssum hamalocarpum in vitro. The experiment was designed as factorial completely randomized with four replications. Treatment included five levels of drought i.e. 0, – 0.19, – 0.25, – 0.41 and – 0.99 Mpa and five levels of salinity including 0, 50, 1...
